Question ZnCl Batteries

5 months 3 weeks ago - 5 months 3 weeks ago #41418 by AndyG
Is my mind failing?
I use lots of Panasonic ZnCl D cells made up as 6V battery packs. Used them for years. Deliberately don't use alkalines as they are too expensive, the short circuit current when new is too high and a set of batteries deliberately shorted out is still only a dead set of batteries irrespective of their technology!
I have routinely changed batteries when the pack voltage drops to 5.6-5.7V. They still give about 1.5A short circuit so are good for most 'battery and bulb' experiments.

In the past year or so I feel that I am changing batteries more often. I've been noticing "odd" battery packs that don't deliver current. I had two battery packs today; 5.5V open circuit and only 20mA short circuit (perhaps that's reasonable) but the second at 5.8V open circuit delivering 30mA s/c. The batteries appear balanced so not a dodgy one in the pack. It's as if they develop massive internal resistance - something which never used to happen.

Anyone else noticed similar life expectancy reductions with batteries?

It may be corroded terminals rather than a battery issue.
Have a look at the spring holders and see if they have corrosion on them. Most packs can have the corroded unit removed and replaced with a new one.

Checked those. New batteries always cure the issue and the problem is usually even across the pack, not just at individual terminals.
