Idea A quick demo to show electrical field strength/ Voltage per meter

I heard this at an IOP event we recently held and thought it would be useful to try it out. Unfortunately I cannot remember who said it but it seemed so simple it was worth a go.
Using an LED two optics pins, a bit of buoyant rubber (some whiteboard erasers are made of similar foam),a trough of salty water, power supply, crocodile clips and a metallic test-tube holder.
When a current flows the field is such that the LED will light only when there is a minimum voltage across the terminals. This depends on the orientation of the diode.
