Question Getting those odd characters ...

Something I used in my MSDOS days but had forgotten ... it may be of use.

How do you get those awkward characters - like ½, º or Æ on a Windoze PC in places (like here) when you can't use shortcuts such as Word's insert->symbol?
1) <num lock> on
2) start->accessories->system tools->character map
3) click on the character you want (sometimes in the font set you want if you are not using the windows default. The keystroke shortcut is shown in the bottom right corner.
4) In you post/app or whatever hold the <ALT> key, type the number on the numeric keypad, release <ALT> and as if by magic the character appears!
There are character lists you can print on the net, note down and post-it the handful that are regularly useful or just use character map as and when required.

This generally only works reliably with characters up to 0255 but that should be enough for everyone!
And for your next test, some 1970's ASCII art ... :-)

That brings back memories....

Once spent the whole afternoon drawing Snoopy on top of his kennel.

(And not what I was suppose to be doing!)

All I need is a fistful of 132-column, music-rule fan-fold and I'll be in historic computer heaven ...
