Question Antibiotic e strips

2 years 8 months ago #40273 by TecHKnow
has anybody any idea what these are and secondly where to get them. I thought they were referring to the antibiotic discs. However, on our Board syllabus they are introducing these and nobody has a clue what they are. I bet somebody here though does know!

Thanks

From what I can gather it's a strip of an antibiotic with a gradient of concentrations.

So rather than measure the 'dead zone' circle around the disc, you lay the strip onto the agar and it gives you the minimum concentration of the antibiotic needed to kill the microbe.

Bet they're expensive.

Nope, never heard of 'em but interest was piqued so I googled and found this site:-
microbeonline.com/e-test-epsilometer-tes...and-interpretations/

Have to wonder if these exam boards have ever heard of budget constraints!

I guess they are trying for a more specific version of a gradient slope (we pour gradient slopes with TCP in it) to test susceptibility or the good old Penicillin discs.

The strips (Epsilometer test strips) are for accurate analysis, not the sort of 'showing a principle' at schools.

Seems like more expense than it is worth.
I think you need a more targeted media to grow it on, but the main point is a good even lawn growth... HAHAHAH with kids.
Probably fine for a few sixth form pupils to do as an alternative and to just see they can be used, rather than read anything in to it.

I saw that as well and contacted the Exam Board. They have said we can use the Antibiotic Mast Rings.
