Question Ideas for yr 6

2 years 2 months ago #40711 by Kasey
In the down time when Yr11 have left, it has been decided that some teachers will go into the feeder junior school and do a 30 - 40 minute science lesson.

Need ideas for wow/bang/interesting demos that I can take with me (Oh, yes, I have to go!), that aren't difficult to prep/don't need a lot of stuff/aren't dangerous and will get them interested!

Thanks!

Slime as always of various type.
Probably best with PVA glue and starch, mixed in plastic cups, in bin after.

Volcano, elephants toothpaste.
Small pop bottles, yeast & H202 type, throw in bin after.

Electrickery and magnets. I've found kids always like to just play with magnets, moving things, repelling things.

I could go on, we teach, at the moment, year 6 here. But you'll be more a STEM/Science Ambassador style.

Go wildlife hunting(ecology style), use tablets/phones as sensors (light, sound, temperature etc, compass, if you have them or can get hold of them.

Also it'll depend on what they actually need to be taught for the rest of the year.

Colour, all sorts, but get some lasers down there.

If you can get them to program micro:bit for the sensors or a project, even better.

CLEAPSS of course have their Primary Resources

Thank you! It's starting that's the problem!

Will also contact the junior schools to see if there is anything they want.

Iodine clock demo? I worked out a portable method with one stock solution to be dispensed into beakers and 6 or 7 bottles with the different dilutions in - all to be poured into the beakers at the same time.
