Solved Potion or not petition?

Do any of you think there is any milage in trying to start a campaign via 38 degrees lobbying website (or any similar site) to urge the government to properly fund training science technicians in schools / colleges etc.
As some of us are retired or nearing that time my worry is who is going to properly replace us since I shudder to think of some of the ad hoc arrangements that will be put in place to try and get round their problem with potentially disastrous consequences
Yes it may end up tilting at windmills but I have many memories of helping all the students in the 42 years I did this malarkey!

I'll agree with you David. It worries me too; thinking back to when I started as a technician in a school, I was very neieve. I didn't know about CLEAPSS and I did some things that I would go loopy about now if I found someone doing them eg when told to get rid of used Petri dishes, I put them in a bowl of bleach, scraped out the agar, put the agar in the bin and washed up the dishes to use again!!!

I am now 60, my colleague is 57. New have a third tech, 37 year old who is completing his degree and is hoping not to be a technician after that. So, in a matter of a few years our jobs may need to be filled. Probably by less techs and by by someone as neieve as I was 20+ years ago.

Now, I feel I have a lot of knowlege and experience that ideally should be passed on to those coming into technicianing, therefore I would like to be a trainer of new techs, or at least giving advice to those coming into being a tech, but the money isn't there. I have trained several techs and am not adverse to getting a qualification to train techs to pass a qual in technicianing. This would be an ideal way to finish my career before retirement, considering that I have to work longer with the increase in state pension age and that I am not sure I will be fit enough to be doing this relatively physical job I am doing now in 6 years time!

So yes, start a petition. I'll sign straight away!

Don't see any reason why not - it would at least raise the profile of the profession a bit.

yeah I agree, why not, they probably will take no notice whatsoever but if at least one person thinks about the problem it that will be more than is happening now! By the way DampSquib is it so wrong to bleach the plates to kill bugs?

I agree, it can't do any harm and may do some good.
We can only hope!

I will sign too.

I am training my own replacement technician and it started back in January. He will end up with NVQ3 through Stockton Riverside college. I hope to retire about 6 months after he is qualified and he'll have 2.5 years experience here. We have two other technicians he will be working with after that.

I think all the petition sites will give you a box to un/tick if you don't want to hear from them again.

I too worry about the future, mainly because the old sources, such as people who find the job combines science with school holidays may dry up because the pay is so below the level of expertise needed to do the job properly that it becomes a no-brainer.

There should be a course, but my guess is that it won't happen until someone realises its a job that requires a lot of science knowledge and that a lot of that knowledge actually comes from previous work; or there is an incident that shows the need for technicians in schools

Random teacher I don't know was making small talk on the way over to the dining hall last week. Asked me what I actually do in my job as Chemistry Technician.
Took a quiet deep breath and gave her a quick summary. Then mentioned this problem about who will replace us when we all retire.
She said, well, the teachers will do it themselves.
Another deep breath.
Managed to control myself enough just to say, it is a full time job, you know. And walked away quickly.
