Question A question of priorities .....

2 years 10 months ago #40370 by Baldilocks
I was contacted yesterday by an agency that I applied to a few years ago who were asking if I was still looking for a job. I told them that I was retired and only willing to consider a job that was (a) short term and (b) very local. They said that they had one that needed someone desperately and it was local - I asked where and they told me - a place where I wotked a few years ago and left because of serious safety issues.

I know that they have a new head now so thought I'd have a look at the advert.

Item 12 of 'Main Duties' reads:
Line manage other technicnans (sic) in the area with the assistance of the Head of
Science.

And here is their list of 'Qualities'
.
Essential Qualities:
1 To have experience of dealing with people - parents, visitors, pupils and staff.
2 To have the ability to work under pressure.
3 To have the ability to prioritise tasks.
4 To be willing to be flexible.
5 To have a tidy, organised approach to their work and surroundings.
6 To demonstrate a sense of humour.
7 To use your own initiative when necessary.
8 To be willing to take responsibility, as appropriate.

Desirable Qualities:
1 To be a non smoker
2 Knowledge of Chemistry.

Is it me, or is this completely wrong?
Nothing about line managing, nothing about H&S, nothing about training with hazardous substances, but the ability to tell jokes is 'essential'!

Good grief!
A school advert with a spelling mistake doesn't show that school in a good light. (We had one several years ago and the HR dept. took some stick for that).
How about responding with these:
Essential Qualities:
1 To have experience of dealing with people - parents, visitors, pupils and staff.
"Yes I went to school once -as a pupil"
2 To have the ability to work under pressure.
"Absolutely ! 760mm Hg or their about works for me - I can work under other units too"
3 To have the ability to prioritise tasks.
"can prioritise - outcome may not be as others want"
4 To be willing to be flexible.
"would love to be flexible, as old age is taking its toll"
5 To have a tidy, organised approach to their work and surroundings.
""My approach is organised and tidy, but the environment isn't necessarily the same"
6 To demonstrate a sense of humour.
"See application comments, (Are you really after a joker?)."
7 To use your own initiative when necessary.
"Necessary for me - no problem!"
8 To be willing to take responsibility, as appropriate.
" Is it ever appropriate to let a joker take responsibility?"

Desirable Qualities:
1 To be a non smoker
"I burn quite cleanly, but the heroin injections are a problem"
2 Knowledge of Chemistry.
" Chemistry - a science often taught in schools"

Problem is that JDs are now written by "trust boards" and "trust HR departments" that have no idea what the job is and their only concern is a "consistent format JD".

My JD has 'a sense of humour' on it but under the desirable qualities.

But it did include H & S, and keeping up to date.

I was also asked if I was a tidy worker!

Ability to cope under pressure means coping with academics who don't know their Coxyx from their humerus !
