Question Vertical Tutor Groups

1 year 9 months ago #41076 by Kasey
We have just been told we are expected to be co-tutors after Christmas.
Everybody.
Not a whisper of this beforehand, amazingly.
IT tech brought up the prospect of extra pay - not a chance.
The thing is I used to do this before, but I had another tech who wasn't a co-tutor so we managed.

Is anyone else a tutor?
How do you manage?

If I was asked I would consider it only on the basis of an additional contract which would not impact the number of hours I work as a full time technician.
I would not do it in normal technician time - I'm fully employed already and the 'extra duties' would simply result in working extra time to try to catch up on my normal duties.

If they are trying to impose this I would ask for full training to supervise students. In addition I would ask management what part of your current job you no longer need to do to compensate for the time lost being a tutor. I would also talk to a Union rep.

Short answer: '"Sorry, not a reasonable duty commensurate with my contract and training."

Unfortunately they already know I can do it because I'm a Science HLTA and it's on my CV....

It has been said that we should all refuse, but not everyone is on board with this - at least half actually want to do it.

I have flagged up that since we moved to a five period day (from four doubles) I have 15 - 20 extra lessons per week to do, plus this is an extra 100 minutes, what do they want me to drop, but it fell on deaf ears.

All I keep getting told is 'Whatever it takes.'

If it fell on deaf ears and they insist on the change of contract, when the new regime starts, begin dropping stuff ... When they complain, you did make them aware in writing that the new duties would conflict with and impact the duties of your current contract. What would they have you drop ...

Eventually it will change ...

Problem solved! Well, postponed really.
Apparently it's not 'viable' now so they're putting it off till September.
