Hello all, my name is Chris and I have recently started working as a science technician, I have been here about 7 weeks and am settling in well so far.

I am taking my time to get to know the role and I thought signing up to this site would be a great way to learn even more!

A little about me, I love all things sci-fi but especially Doctor Who and Star Wars. I cosplay in my free time and am trying to reignite my love for music also!

My scientific interests are quite broad, I love microbiology, ecology, virology, botany, genetics and ornithology but also a lot of physics topics like aviation and space science. Sadly these biology and physics topics rarely overlap so I usually stick to the biology stuff in work haha.

My role as a science technician covers all ages of Biology learning at my school but also the KS3 classes.

Looking forward to seeing you all on this site! :)

    Hi and welcome.

    What a lot of interests!

Sorry, but I'm Doctor Who (I want a sonic screwdriver) and Star Trek, microbiology is done under sufferance!

Anyway, I've been a Tech coming up for 20 years, I still enjoy the job but not the washing up....

I was in Belfast yesterday up at the Ulster Hospital. I am from Newry. So you are not too far away. Any info, news or gossip from the Belfast Board area, please share them here. There are a few more techies from around Northern ireland here.

    Welcome to the group.
As a physics tech with primary interest in electronics, astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology I can assure you that you can mix that with ornithothogy, ecology, entomology (diptera specifically), mycology and looking at those growy-things with leaves on ... You just need to work at it! :-)

Thanks! I have a few sonics (props sadly, not real ones haha).

Glad to hear you are still enjoying the job after that much time. Who knows how long I will be in the role but for now I am loving it!

Thank you! Having had a good look round the site already I know it will be very helpful and I look forward to contributing.

As I have only recently started, I haven't too much craic to pass on but when there is some I shall be sure to pass it along! :P

Good point, I'll get my labcoat on and start cooking up some genetic experiments on making some bacteria capable of interstellar travel :P

To prove the point - I just had a wander around and photographed about 20 species of fungus and identified a soldierfly under the always-set-up-to-look-at-flies microscope :-) Just got to get the pictures as a slideshow on the display screen now ...

I used to work in a school in Belfast before moving closer to home. Pretty sure one of your Biology teachers (Mrs. L) did a maternity cover there.
